Food delivery courier: employee pay and gig work

Food delivery couriers collect prepared orders, keep items secure, and complete customer handoffs. App-based work such as Uber Eats is one route; employee delivery jobs are another. Compare the pay for all time committed, including waiting and travel between orders.

Gig pay is not a salary conversion

Use actual worker receipts, subtract costs, and count waiting, travel, preparation, and cleanup. Shift and order availability can change from week to week.

Employee wages cover the named occupation, not self-employed earnings. A replacement target is the rate needed under chosen assumptions; it does not establish available work or expected pay.

The BLS figure is for the broad U.S. employee group Couriers and Messengers. It is an occupation comparator, not a measured Uber Eats courier rate or a promise of gig earnings. Use actual platform receipts, total time, and costs in the calculator.

Working in this sector

Check the current platform or employer requirements for your location, transport, insurance, and food handoff duties. Keep customer information private.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Order collection and identity checks
  • Secure food transport and handoff
  • Route navigation and customer communication
  • Delivery time and expense tracking

Build proof, not just a list

Keep an anonymized delivery log from authorized work or a supervised practice route. Record total working time, collection waits, completed orders, mileage, receipts, and expenses; show the difference between pay per delivery and profit per total hour without exposing customer addresses.

What do you keep from the work?

Start with the actual payout per delivery or total receipts for a shift, separating tips only if they are not already included. Count collection waits, travel between jobs, and the return journey when they are part of the work. Deduct actual vehicle or bicycle costs, equipment, insurance, and fees that have not already been withheld. Divide the remaining profit by all working hours before comparing it with employee hourly pay.

A payout is not profit

Add the worker payouts and tips you actually receive. Subtract transport, supplies, equipment, insurance, and fees that have not already been deducted. Divide by every hour committed to the work, including gaps between paid jobs.

A busy shift is not a full-year forecast. Compare quieter weeks too. Your profit still has to cover your chosen benefits budget and personal taxes; neither is included in the employee wage reference.

Employee, shift work, or independent gigs?

Working as an employee

An employee courier may receive scheduled hours, an employer vehicle or mileage reimbursement, and access to workplace benefits. Confirm which time is paid, who funds transport, the handling of tips, and the written pay terms before comparing offers.

Independent work and paid shifts

App and independent delivery receipts vary with completed work, location, timing, and tips. Unpaid waits and transport expenses can lower profit per hour. A flexible schedule does not establish a guaranteed hourly wage; use your own complete work log and actual payout records.
