Skills that make the work valuable
- SQL transformation design
- Dimensional data modeling
- Data tests and documentation
- Version-controlled analytics workflows
Build proof, not just a list
Transform fictional subscriptions and invoices into documented revenue and retention models. Add uniqueness and relationship tests, show how late records are handled, and trace each output metric to its raw source.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope named data models, business definitions, test coverage, and documentation ownership. Separate an audit of existing logic from migration and stakeholder reconciliation. Warehouse compute, historical corrections, and disputed metric definitions can add effort long after the transformation queries first run successfully.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for analytics engineer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An embedded role can build durable trust between data engineering, finance, and reporting teams. Progress may depend on resolving ownership and definitions rather than simply shipping a technically correct transformation.
Running a freelance business
Analytics model audits can be scoped around concrete data problems and documented improvements. A successful handover requires a client owner for definitions, tests, and future changes to source systems.

Try one small next step
Model subscriptions and invoices in a local database using fictional records. Write tests for duplicate invoices and document how a cancellation changes the reporting outputs.
