Skills that make the work valuable
- Funnel diagnostics
- User behavior research
- A/B test design
- Experiment interpretation
Build proof, not just a list
Analyze a fictional inquiry funnel with synthetic data, then propose a usability study and one controlled experiment. Show tracking assumptions, primary and guardrail metrics, and how inconclusive results would affect the next decision.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Separate analytics validation, research, test design, implementation, and reporting when defining scope. Include traffic assessment and stakeholder reviews before promising an experiment schedule. Low traffic, broken tracking, and development bottlenecks can prolong tests, so bill for agreed research and execution rather than guaranteed conversion improvements.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for conversion rate optimization specialist work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment can provide ongoing access to data and development resources needed for experiments. Check whether teams accept inconclusive findings and protect time for sound measurement instead of rewarding only positive test results.
Running a freelance business
Independent optimization can suit focused diagnostics and experiment programs. Client traffic and implementation speed control what is testable, while attribution uncertainty makes outcome guarantees and loosely defined performance fees difficult to price responsibly.
Where this career could take you

- 03Conversion optimization lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Review an inquiry form you own, list possible obstacles, and observe a willing person using it. Distinguish what you actually observed from changes you would still need to test.
