Skills that make the work valuable
- C or C++ programming
- Interrupt and timing analysis
- Hardware communication protocols
- Firmware debugging
Build proof, not just a list
Use a simulator or spare board to build a temperature logger with buffered readings and fault detection. Document timing assumptions, interrupted writes, and a test method for disconnected sensors.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Start by confirming hardware availability, interface specifications, test equipment, and who owns board faults. Quote firmware features with a defined test plan. Prototype revisions, shipping delays, lab setup, and investigations spanning hardware and software can make calendar availability very different from billable engineering time.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for embedded software developer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An employer may provide costly equipment, hardware specialists, and access to manufacturing feedback. Development can be tied to physical prototypes and certification processes with less flexibility than a purely software product.
Running a freelance business
Embedded expertise can support well-defined device investigations and firmware work. Equipment costs and hardware dependencies need clear reimbursement and scheduling terms, especially when a fault cannot initially be assigned to one discipline.
Where this career could take you
- 01Junior Firmware Developer
- 02Embedded Software Developer
- 03Embedded Systems Lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Simulate a sensor and implement a bounded data buffer with error reporting. Explain its memory use and test failure cases before purchasing specialized hardware or equipment.
