Build proof, not just a list

Build a small puzzle game with a complete play loop, save recovery, remappable controls, and measured frame times. Document asset permissions and explain what changed after observing unfamiliar players.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Contract around a specific playable feature or prototype with explicit platform and asset assumptions. Price iteration rounds and integration with the existing game. Performance tuning, creative changes, licensing, and unpredictable approval cycles can consume much more time than implementing the first playable version.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for game developer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

A studio can offer specialist artists, designers, and production support that make larger games possible. Project funding, release pressure, and ownership of creative direction deserve careful consideration when evaluating an offer.

Running a freelance business

Contract game work allows a narrow technical specialty across projects. Milestone acceptance can depend on subjective creative feedback, and gaps between funded productions affect the hours you can realistically sell.
