Skills that make the work valuable
- Workflow modeling
- Visual database design
- Role-based access configuration
- Automation troubleshooting
Build proof, not just a list
Prototype an equipment request portal with approval rules, permission checks, and an exportable data model. Document automation limits, failure notifications, and how another person can change an approval step safely.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Quote a documented workflow with limits on forms, roles, records, and connected systems. Separate the build from platform subscriptions and ongoing automation use. Record limits, paid extensions, undocumented manual steps, and platform lock-in can increase the true cost even when initial construction is quick.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for no code developer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal role can bring close access to process owners and useful feedback. You may need to navigate governance rules and prove that visual applications meet the same data responsibilities as other systems.
Running a freelance business
Visual tools make a small workflow easy to demonstrate during discovery. Your margin still depends on process clarity, subscription ownership, and whether the client can handle routine changes after training.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Map a simple approval process on paper, then prototype it with sample records in a free environment. Test one rejected request and explain the data export path.
