Skills that make the work valuable
- Exploratory testing
- Risk-based test planning
- Defect reproduction
- Requirements analysis
Build proof, not just a list
Review a demo checkout and create a risk-based test plan, boundary cases, and reproducible defect reports. Include evidence, impact, and a release recommendation that acknowledges the limits of your coverage.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope testing by flows, supported environments, risk priorities, and reporting deliverables. Separate initial assessment from retesting and regression rounds. Environment setup, missing test data, and blocked builds reduce productive testing time; avoid promising an absence of defects as the definition of successful delivery.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for qa analyst work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
A permanent quality role lets you learn product risks and influence requirements earlier. Your effectiveness depends on access to builds, useful test environments, and a team that responds to findings.
Running a freelance business
Independent testing can offer a fresh view before a release. Access restrictions and unstable builds can waste reserved capacity, so define prerequisites, reporting depth, and how blocked time is handled.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Test a public demo application within its intended use. Write three clear defect reports and ask a developer to reproduce them using only your written instructions.
