Skills that make the work valuable
- Application design
- Version control with Git
- Automated testing
- Debugging and profiling
Build proof, not just a list
Build an equipment booking application with conflict detection, user permissions, and automated tests. Explain one design tradeoff, demonstrate a failed booking, and document how to restore its stored data.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Begin with a paid discovery stage when requirements are unclear, then estimate bounded features with written acceptance criteria. Include code review, deployment, documentation, and warranty limits. Unpaid maintenance and repeated context switching can consume the hours available for new delivery.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for software developer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
A product team can provide code review, mentoring, and continuity across releases. Your scope may depend on team priorities, and compensation may include equity that needs separate evaluation.
Running a freelance business
Independent projects offer control over clients and technical scope, but discovery and support need commercial boundaries. A large project can also concentrate income in one customer relationship.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Choose one repetitive task you know, interview a potential user, and build the smallest working version. Record feedback before adding another feature or framework.
