Bookkeeper: salary vs freelance rates

A bookkeeper keeps a business's transaction records organized and reconciled. Reliable records help owners understand cash movement, prepare for accountant review, and find missing or incorrectly classified items before they accumulate.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Transaction classification
  • Bank and ledger reconciliation
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • Month-end documentation

Build proof, not just a list

Create a fictional month of business transactions with intentional errors. Reconcile the bank activity, explain corrections, and produce a clean month-end pack with unresolved questions for the business owner.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Scope monthly work by transaction volume, account count, reconciliation complexity, and reporting deadlines. Price historical cleanup separately after inspecting records. Include secure software and client follow-up time; missing receipts and mixed personal transactions can make two businesses with similar revenue require very different levels of effort.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for bookkeeper work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An employee can learn one business's transaction patterns and work closely with its accountant. Compare close deadlines and peak-period expectations with the training and review support provided.

Running a freelance business

Recurring monthly work can support a stable client base, but several clients may share the same deadlines. Clear record-submission dates and defined responsibilities help prevent repeated unpaid chasing.
