Skills that make the work valuable
- People process assessment
- Role and policy documentation
- Manager interview facilitation
- Confidential records handling
Build proof, not just a list
Create an onboarding improvement pack for a fictional small employer. Include role expectations, manager checkpoints, a records access plan, and questions that require review by qualified local specialists.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope the people process, workforce size, locations, and review responsibilities before quoting. Separate document development from ongoing advisory availability. Include secure handling, interviews, and updates in operating costs; matters needing specialist legal or payroll input should have a named reviewer rather than an assumed inclusion.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for hr consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment offers continuing context about managers, culture, and employee needs. Broader responsibility may bring sensitive decisions and time-critical issues, so evaluate actual support and escalation authority alongside salary.
Running a freelance business
Freelance HR work can be packaged around onboarding or performance process improvements. Boundaries matter when a client expects unlimited employee relations support or advice beyond your qualifications and experience.
