Brand designer: salary vs freelance rates

A brand designer translates positioning into a recognizable visual identity. The work creates consistent choices for logos, typography, color, and applications so an organization presents a coherent message.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Identity systems
  • Brand discovery
  • Logo development
  • Usage guidelines

Build proof, not just a list

Build a fictional service business identity with a positioning brief, alternate concepts, and a concise usage guide. Apply it to realistic touchpoints and explain how the system remains readable across formats.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Define whether the engagement covers strategy, naming, identity design, or rollout, since these are distinct commitments. Specify concept directions, decision makers, and revision rounds. Include font or image licenses and presentation preparation, and price additional applications separately from the core identity system.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for brand designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An internal brand role can provide deep context and ownership over long-term consistency. Assess the balance between strategic identity work, routine asset production, and coordination with external creative teams.

Running a freelance business

Independent brand projects can offer clear milestones and concentrated creative responsibility. Client indecision, disputed positioning, and unmanaged rollout requests can stretch the work, making discovery and approval gates especially valuable.
