Motion designer: salary vs freelance rates

A motion designer uses movement, timing, and visual storytelling to explain ideas or support a brand. Strong work makes information easier to follow while fitting the production and distribution context.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Storyboarding
  • Animation timing
  • Compositing
  • Motion typography

Build proof, not just a list

Produce a short original explainer using simple shapes and typography. Include the storyboard, style frames, timing decisions, and alternate aspect ratios, and identify the music or assets you created or have permission to use.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Estimate from duration, animation complexity, approved storyboards, output formats, and revision rounds rather than runtime alone. Separate illustration, voice recording, and music licensing where needed. Rendering, asset preparation, and late script changes can consume substantial nonbillable time without increasing the finished video's length.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for motion designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

A staff position may provide a production pipeline and access to creative direction. Examine rendering resources, expected turnaround, and how often urgent campaign changes displace planned animation and review work.

Running a freelance business

Freelance motion projects can build a distinctive visual portfolio across clients. Hardware, rendering, licensed assets, and gaps between productions must be funded, while storyboard approval helps limit costly late-stage revisions.
