Business analyst: salary vs freelance rates

A business analyst translates an operational problem into clear requirements and decisions. They connect stakeholder needs, process details, and evidence so a team can improve a workflow without solving the wrong problem.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Stakeholder requirements interviews
  • Process and data mapping
  • Acceptance criteria writing
  • Requirements traceability

Build proof, not just a list

Study a booking or purchase approval workflow. Draw the current process, identify conflicting requirements, propose a future process, and write acceptance criteria with examples of normal and exception cases.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Quote a defined workflow, requirements package, or discovery phase with named stakeholders and review rounds. Include time to reconcile conflicting requests and validate assumptions. Data cleanup, implementation support, and additional business units should be separate scope items rather than quietly expanding the original analysis.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for business analyst work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

Employment builds domain knowledge and allows you to follow requirements through implementation. Progress comes from resolving ambiguity and showing that the delivered process meets a real operational need.

Running a freelance business

A consultant can sell focused discovery before a larger implementation. The main commercial risk is analysis expanding across departments, so define who signs off and which process boundaries apply.
