Build proof, not just a list
Build a success plan for a fictional software customer. Define their desired outcome, onboarding milestones, adoption signals, escalation rules, and a business review that separates activity from demonstrated value.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope engagements around a customer segment, onboarding redesign, or success operating model. Include interviews, data review, and staff enablement in the fee. A recurring advisory agreement needs defined account coverage; being available for every customer escalation can replace the improvement work the client originally purchased.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for customer success consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An employee can build customer relationships over the full lifecycle and learn why accounts retain or leave. Compare variable compensation terms and account responsibilities alongside the base salary.
Running a freelance business
A consultant can improve onboarding and account processes without owning an indefinite book of customers. Results depend on adoption by sales, support, and product teams, so agree on implementation ownership.

Try one small next step
