Skills that make the work valuable
- Career exploration conversations
- Transferable skills mapping
- Job search planning
- Interview practice and feedback
Build proof, not just a list
Create a fictional career transition case with a skills inventory, three plausible options, evidence gaps, and a small experiment for each. Include a coaching agreement that avoids promises of employment or salary outcomes.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Offer a defined session package or a bounded job search planning engagement with clear preparation and follow-up limits. Include intake, notes, and business development in your capacity model. Coaching should remain within your competence; distinguish it from counseling or other services that may require specific qualifications in the client's location.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for career coach work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment in career services can provide supervision, established resources, and a consistent audience. Role requirements vary by setting, so compare the actual advising or counseling duties and qualifications before using a broad salary reference.
Running a freelance business
Independent coaches can focus on a particular transition or audience. Client acquisition and preparation are substantial costs, and outcomes depend on many factors beyond coaching, so avoid guarantees in packages and marketing.
Where this career could take you
- 01Career services assistant or peer mentor
- 02Career coach
- 03Specialist coach or career services lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Practice a structured career exploration conversation with a willing peer, focus on evidence and options, and ask which questions helped them identify a concrete next action.
