Skills that make the work valuable
- Statistical modeling
- Experimental design
- Model validation
- Python data analysis
Build proof, not just a list
Forecast demand from an open time-series dataset using a simple baseline and a competing model. Use chronological validation, report uncertainty, and explain whether the improvement would justify operational complexity.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Start with a feasibility study that checks data access, target definitions, and a meaningful baseline. Price research separately from production deployment and monitoring. Labeling work, experiment failures, and long validation cycles are real costs; do not make payment depend on an unsupported accuracy or savings promise.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for data scientist work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal role may offer domain experts, historical data, and time to evaluate results after a decision. Research priorities can still shift, and a technically strong model may never reach production.
Running a freelance business
Independent research can answer a focused feasibility question without a full team hire. Data suitability is uncertain, so sell a rigorous investigation and defined artifacts rather than guaranteeing a successful predictive system.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Take an open forecasting dataset and compare a basic baseline with one model. Write a short recommendation that includes leakage checks, uncertainty, and reasons to reject the model.
