Skills that make the work valuable
- Continuous integration and delivery
- Deployment automation
- Secret management
- Release rollback design
Build proof, not just a list
Build a release pipeline for a sample application with tests, versioned artifacts, approval checks, and rollback. Demonstrate a failed deployment and document how credentials stay out of source files and logs.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Quote a release workflow with named repositories, environments, and handover requirements. Separate pipeline setup from infrastructure repairs and developer training. Build capacity, migration from existing scripts, permissions, and release-time support can increase effort, especially when the client expects continued ownership of every deployment problem.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for devops engineer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment supports ongoing collaboration across development and operations, which is essential for changing release habits. The title can cover very different duties, so evaluate actual ownership and incident expectations carefully.
Running a freelance business
A release automation project can make a clear process improvement visible. Tooling alone does not change team practices, so include adoption and training while defining the limits of later operational support.
Where this career could take you
- 01Build and Release Engineer
- 02DevOps Engineer
- 03DevOps Lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Automate tests and a local deployment for a sample app, then intentionally fail a release. Write recovery instructions another developer can follow without asking you for help.
