Skills that make the work valuable
- Routing and switching
- Network segmentation
- Packet analysis
- Network change planning
Build proof, not just a list
Design a simulated office network with separate user and server segments, documented address plans, and a backup route. Demonstrate a controlled link failure and explain the tests used to verify recovery.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Separate discovery, design, configuration, site work, and change-window support. Confirm equipment ownership, cabling assumptions, and acceptance tests. Travel, hardware availability, licensing, and work outside normal hours can dominate costs; quote remote planning differently from installation and ongoing responsibility for connectivity incidents.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for network engineer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal network role offers familiarity with site needs, equipment history, and escalation paths. Physical access and planned maintenance windows can constrain working location and schedule more than a software-only role.
Running a freelance business
Network design and troubleshooting can support focused project work. Site travel, equipment procurement, and emergency expectations affect margin, so define hardware costs, testing boundaries, and post-change support before reserving capacity.
Where this career could take you
- 01Network Technician
- 02Network Engineer
- 03Network Architect
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Build a small network topology in a simulator and document permitted traffic between segments. Break one link, observe recovery, and write a clear change and rollback plan.
