Skills that make the work valuable

  • Experiment design
  • Funnel analysis
  • Customer research
  • Retention measurement

Build proof, not just a list

Build a growth experiment brief for a fictional subscription service, including a funnel map, baseline assumptions, test design, and decision criteria. Explain confounding factors and how you would avoid treating weak evidence as proof.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Quote a defined diagnostic or experiment program with limits on channels, implementation support, and reporting. Separate advertising spend, product changes, and creative production. Instrumentation repairs and inconclusive tests still require work, so compensation should reflect the agreed effort and responsibility rather than a promised growth percentage.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for growth marketer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An employee role can provide access to product experiments and customer data across the lifecycle. Assess whether growth targets include retention and customer value, and whether engineering capacity supports the testing agenda.

Running a freelance business

Independent growth work can focus on specific bottlenecks or experiments. Limited product access and incomplete measurement can constrain conclusions, while results-based fees may expose you to decisions and market conditions you cannot control.
