Machine Learning Engineer: salary vs freelance rates

Make machine learning models usable within dependable software systems. The work connects training, deployment, monitoring, and recovery so a model can operate within practical latency, privacy, and cost constraints.

U.S. employee wage reference

$120,230 / year

Data Scientists · May 2025 national median

Illustrative freelance rate

$129.36 / hour

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

The wage is for the named occupation; the hourly rate is a planning calculation, not a surveyed freelance price for this specialty. Adjust the assumptions below.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Model serving
  • Training pipeline automation
  • Feature validation
  • Model performance monitoring

Build proof, not just a list

Deploy a small text classification model locally with a versioned interface, latency measurements, and input checks. Demonstrate a rollback and a monitoring report that detects a deliberate change in sample inputs.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Separate model evaluation, deployment, integration, and ongoing operation in the scope. Agree on latency, throughput, evaluation data, and rollback behavior. Training compute, inference charges, labeling, and monitoring can exceed coding costs, while changing data may require maintenance even when the software itself has not changed.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for machine learning engineer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An employer may supply data access, evaluation expertise, and infrastructure for operating models. Production responsibility includes reliability and data changes, so clarify how research work and incident duties are shared.

Running a freelance business

A deployment specialty can help clients move an evaluated model into an application. Recurring compute and model degradation need a funded owner, with explicit limits on maintenance and performance commitments.
