Skills that make the work valuable
- Problem structuring
- Interview and evidence synthesis
- Business case modeling
- Executive recommendation writing
Build proof, not just a list
Choose a public business problem and create a concise case study. Define the decision, distinguish evidence from assumptions, compare options, and recommend an experiment that could challenge your preferred answer.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Price a clearly defined decision and evidence plan, with explicit deliverables and review points. Research access, interviews, and financial modeling drive effort more than slide count. Include proposal development and business development in your annual capacity model; a high project fee does not imply continuous project occupancy.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for management consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
A consulting employer can provide experienced reviewers, research resources, and access to larger engagements. Compare travel expectations and workload patterns when judging the value of a compensation package.
Running a freelance business
Independence allows a sharper niche and direct client relationships. Selling diagnostic judgment requires credibility, and unpaid proposals or long procurement cycles can materially reduce realized annual earnings.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Write a two-page recommendation on a small organization's decision using public evidence, then ask someone with operating experience to challenge your assumptions.
