Skills that make the work valuable
- Campaign data reconciliation
- Acquisition cost analysis
- Attribution interpretation
- Marketing experiment design
Build proof, not just a list
Combine fictional campaign spend, leads, and sales into a channel performance review. State attribution rules, identify missing conversions, and propose a controlled test that could distinguish incremental results from existing demand.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Define the channels, reporting period, access requirements, and decision the analysis should support. Separate tracking cleanup from recurring reporting. Connector fees, inconsistent identifiers, privacy restrictions, and delayed sales outcomes can add work; avoid tying fees to an attribution model that overstates your control over revenue.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for marketing analyst work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An in-house role can connect campaign analysis with sales and customer retention context. Different teams may value conflicting metrics, so check whether the role can challenge tracking and spending assumptions.
Running a freelance business
A marketing reporting service can solve a recurring visibility problem across channels. Access management and changing tracking rules require maintenance, while the client retains control of campaign decisions and execution.

Try one small next step
Use fictional campaign and sales records to calculate acquisition costs under two attribution rules. Explain why the results differ and what additional evidence would improve a spending decision.
