Skills that make the work valuable
- Workflow architecture
- CRM data mapping
- Automation testing
- Lead-routing rules
Build proof, not just a list
Model a fictional lead follow-up workflow with triggers, data fields, branching, suppression, and failure cases. Test the logic with synthetic records and provide a handoff guide that explains ownership and how to pause the workflow.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Estimate the discovery, integration, workflow build, data cleanup, and testing phases separately. Set limits on systems, branches, historical data, and post-launch support. Platform subscriptions, broken source data, and undocumented legacy rules can expand effort, so an initial audit should precede a firm implementation commitment.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for marketing automation specialist work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
A staff position can support continuous maintenance and stronger relationships with sales operations. Clarify who owns data quality, access permissions, and incident response when an automation affects customer communications or lead routing.
Running a freelance business
Freelance automation projects can have tangible build and handoff milestones. Unknown integrations and ongoing support requests create risk, while access delays and fragile client data can limit productive implementation time.

Try one small next step
Draw a simple lead-routing workflow and test it manually with fictional records, including duplicates and missing fields. Document the exceptions before attempting to automate the process.
