Skills that make the work valuable

  • Lighting control
  • Composition
  • Image editing
  • Usage licensing

Build proof, not just a list

Create a cohesive photo series with a written brief, shot plan, and final image selection. Use consenting subjects or objects you own, explain lighting choices, and document intended use and editing decisions.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Separate creative work, shooting time, editing, travel, assistants, and image usage when preparing a quote. Define final image count, delivery formats, and revision or reshoot terms. Culling, backups, equipment upkeep, and licensing administration take time beyond the session, so booking hours should not be mistaken for total labor.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for photographer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

A staff role may provide recurring assignments, equipment, and a shared production environment. Review image-volume expectations, editing responsibilities, travel requirements, and the level of creative control offered within the organization's visual standards.

Running a freelance business

Freelance photography allows niche specialization and control over a portfolio. Seasonal demand, equipment costs, editing time, and image-use negotiations influence profitability, while cancellations and travel can leave gaps that the session fee must help cover.
