Skills that make the work valuable
- Developer tooling design
- Reusable deployment templates
- Self-service workflow design
- Platform adoption measurement
Build proof, not just a list
Build a documented starter template that provisions a local service, runs tests, and exposes useful diagnostics. Ask another developer to use it from scratch and record setup friction and improvement decisions.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope the developer journey, supported application patterns, integrations, and adoption materials rather than promising a general internal platform. Include user interviews and migration assistance. Template maintenance, compatibility with existing services, and support requests can become a continuing product responsibility that needs funding after the pilot.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for platform engineer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal platform role can build close relationships with its developer users and improve tools over time. Success depends on adoption and support capacity, not simply launching another infrastructure component.
Running a freelance business
A platform pilot or developer experience review can have concrete boundaries. Lasting value requires an internal owner, so define the supported patterns and transfer maintenance knowledge before ending the engagement.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Package a sample service with one repeatable setup command and readable diagnostics. Observe another developer using it and revise the documentation based on their actual points of confusion.
