Skills that make the work valuable
- Episode development
- Interview preparation
- Audio production
- Publishing workflows
Build proof, not just a list
Produce a short pilot episode with an original premise and a consenting guest or your own narration. Include a running order, edited audio, transcript, show notes, and a repeatable production checklist with clear ownership.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Define episode length, release frequency, guest booking, recording support, editing depth, and promotional assets in the scope. Separate launch setup from ongoing production. Scheduling, research, transcription, revisions, and file management can outweigh recording time, so a per-episode price should reflect the complete workflow and availability commitment.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for podcast producer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal or studio role can provide editorial partners and an established release schedule. Assess whether guest booking, promotion, analytics, and audio engineering are shared responsibilities or bundled into one production position.
Running a freelance business
Independent podcast production can create recurring episode work and varied subject matter. Guest delays and missed recording dates affect utilization, while unclear boundaries around promotion, revisions, and publishing can turn editing work into full program management.
Where this career could take you
- 01Production assistant
- 02Podcast production specialist
- 03Podcast production lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Record a short original pilot with equipment you already have, then create show notes and a transcript. Ask a listener where the structure or audio became difficult to follow.
