Skills that make the work valuable
- Operating system administration
- Identity and account management
- Patch automation
- Backup recovery procedures
Build proof, not just a list
Create a local virtual-machine lab with limited user accounts, automated updates, and a tested file restore. Write onboarding and recovery instructions, then verify them from a fresh administrator account.
How to price this work as a freelancer
List managed devices, supported systems, maintenance tasks, response windows, and exclusions before offering recurring administration. Charge separately for migrations and major incidents where appropriate. Licensing, remote support tools, unexpected legacy issues, and reserved response capacity can make a low per-device fee unprofitable.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for systems administrator work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment provides continuity with users and a clearer view of infrastructure history. Work can be interrupt-driven, so investigate staffing, escalation support, and how planned maintenance competes with urgent help requests.
Running a freelance business
Recurring administration can create continuity across client relationships. Response promises reserve time even when no ticket arrives, and managing many different environments adds overhead that belongs in the service price.
Where this career could take you

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Configure a local virtual machine with separate user and administrator accounts. Practice restoring a deleted sample file and document a routine maintenance checklist another person can follow.
