Skills that make the work valuable
- Source research
- Subject-matter interviews
- Article structure
- Fact checking
Build proof, not just a list
Publish an original guide answering a narrow question in a field you understand. Include an interview or practical demonstration, cite primary sources, and show the outline and editorial choices behind the finished piece.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Define the brief, research depth, interview count, length range, and revision process for each assignment. Separate writing from content strategy, image sourcing, and publishing. Difficult source access and changing editorial direction can turn a simple article into a larger project without increasing the word count.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for content writer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
A staff role can offer editorial guidance and ongoing access to company expertise. Examine the balance between original reporting, production targets, and time available to verify factual claims before publication.
Running a freelance business
Freelance content writing offers flexibility across subjects and formats. Unpaid pitches, interviews, and inconsistent assignment volume affect income, while clear briefs and revision limits help keep research-heavy work financially sustainable.
