Copywriter: salary vs freelance rates

A copywriter creates persuasive messages that help an audience understand an offer and decide what to do next. Effective copy connects customer needs, credible claims, and a clear action.

U.S. employee wage reference

$76,910 / year

Writers and authors · May 2025 national median

Illustrative freelance rate

$93.26 / hour

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

The wage is for the named occupation; the hourly rate is a planning calculation, not a surveyed freelance price for this specialty. Adjust the assumptions below.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Customer interviewing
  • Message hierarchy
  • Direct-response writing
  • Copy testing

Build proof, not just a list

Write a fictional service landing page with a customer research brief, alternate headlines, and a follow-up email. Explain the audience, supporting evidence, and a testing plan without inventing conversion results or customer testimonials.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Quote a defined asset package with research access, word or page boundaries, and review rounds. Clarify whether offer strategy, interviews, and testing support are included. Legal review, changing product claims, and additional headline variants can expand the work, while performance depends on more than the copy.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for copywriter work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

Staff copywriters can learn a product and audience deeply through repeated campaigns. Evaluate whether they receive customer insight and performance feedback or are expected to produce persuasive claims without supporting evidence.

Running a freelance business

Freelance copywriting allows specialization by customer type and deliverable. Research, prospecting, and approval rounds affect billable capacity, and you need agreement on claim accuracy, revisions, and responsibility for campaign results.

Where this career could take you

  1. 01Junior copywriter
  2. 02Conversion copy specialist
  3. 03Copy lead

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.

Try one small next step

Interview a willing person about a recent purchase, identify their decision criteria, and write two original landing-page openings. Ask which claims need stronger evidence before publication.
