Skills that make the work valuable
- Structural editing
- Line editing
- Style-guide management
- Editorial fact checking
Build proof, not just a list
Edit an original or permission-cleared article and provide a tracked revision, editorial memo, and short style sheet. Explain structural changes separately from sentence improvements and identify factual questions that require author confirmation.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Specify developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, or proofreading before setting the price. Request a representative sample and define length, rounds, and fact-checking responsibility. Poor source material, incomplete drafts, and repeated author rewrites change the workload, so additional passes should have an explicit scope.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for editor work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment may provide a publication schedule, house style, and established reviewers. Assess whether editors have authority to resolve quality concerns and enough time for substantive work alongside production deadlines.
Running a freelance business
Freelance editing offers specialization by subject, audience, or manuscript type. Draft quality varies widely, and you must estimate from real samples while managing author expectations, turnaround commitments, and additional revision passes.
Where this career could take you
- 01Editorial assistant
- 02Subject or format editor
- 03Editorial lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Edit a short piece written by someone who consents, then discuss which changes improved it and which altered their meaning. Use that feedback to refine your editorial notes.
