Skills that make the work valuable
- Funder eligibility research
- Proposal narratives
- Program logic models
- Budget coordination
Build proof, not just a list
Use a publicly available funding brief to draft a clearly labeled practice application for a fictional community project. Include an eligibility checklist, program narrative, budget assumptions, and unanswered questions requiring organizational evidence.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope eligibility research, application sections, budget coordination, and submission support separately, with clear information deadlines. Include meetings and document collection in the estimate. Funding decisions are outside the writer's control, and missing program evidence or late budget changes can create extensive rework near the deadline.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for grant writer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment can provide access to program staff, financial information, and reporting history. Ask how application deadlines align with program planning and who is responsible for validating budgets and outcome claims.
Running a freelance business
Freelance grant writing can suit a sector specialty and defined applications. Client readiness varies, so discovery, evidence collection, and realistic submission schedules matter; an award should never be promised as a deliverable.
Where this career could take you
- 01Grant writing assistant
- 02Institutional funding specialist
- 03Grant development lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Read one public grant application guide and build its compliance checklist. Draft a short practice project narrative, then mark every claim that would require evidence from an organization.
