Skills that make the work valuable
- Learning objectives
- Assessment design
- Scenario-based learning
- Learning accessibility
Build proof, not just a list
Create a short training module for a realistic workplace task, with a measurable objective, practice scenario, and assessment. Pilot it with willing learners and document what their errors reveal about the instruction.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Estimate from audience analysis, learning objectives, interactivity, media needs, and review cycles. Separate instructional design from video production, platform setup, and course maintenance. Subject-expert delays and changes to the underlying process can add work, while accessibility testing and learner evaluation need dedicated time in the budget.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for instructional designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal role can follow training through rollout and observe learner performance. Assess access to subject experts, evaluation data, and time to address performance causes that training alone cannot resolve.
Running a freelance business
Independent instructional design offers focused modules or program redesigns. Clients may underestimate analysis, expert reviews, and testing, while changing processes and platform requirements can extend scope after the learning content is drafted.

Try one small next step
Choose a task you can teach safely and build a short practice activity with feedback. Ask a willing learner to try it and revise the confusing step.
