Skills that make the work valuable

  • Requirements and evaluation criteria
  • Total cost comparison
  • Supplier proposal analysis
  • Negotiation preparation

Build proof, not just a list

Run a fictional purchasing exercise using invented proposals. Create weighted evaluation criteria, a total cost model, clarification questions, and a recommendation that explains tradeoffs and assumptions rather than selecting only on price.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Price a sourcing event or spend diagnostic by category complexity, supplier count, and evaluation stages. Include stakeholder requirements and negotiation preparation in scope. Savings-based terms need an agreed baseline and calculation method; implementation costs, changing volumes, and incumbent contract terms can otherwise create disagreement about the fee.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for procurement consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An employee develops category knowledge and relationships with internal budget owners. Compensation value depends on the scale and complexity of purchasing decisions, with support for contract and specialist review.

Running a freelance business

Consulting can fit a category review or sourcing project with a defined finish. Independence requires transparent handling of supplier relationships and clear separation between advisory fees and any other commercial interests.
