- Dependency scheduling
- Risk and issue management
- Budget and status reporting
Build proof, not just a list
Plan a real community event or small website launch. Publish a scope statement, dependency map, budget, risk register, and closing review that explains what changed and how you responded.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Estimate the number of workstreams, stakeholders, reporting cycles, and delivery months before quoting. A monthly engagement can cover coordination with an agreed capacity ceiling. Reserve time for onboarding and escalation; a project with unstable scope can create substantial unplanned meeting and documentation work.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for project manager work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An employee can learn an organization's approval paths and reuse trusted delivery practices. Progress often depends on handling larger dependencies and communicating problems early enough for others to act.
Running a freelance business
Contract projects offer clear start and finish points, but gaps between assignments reduce billable weeks. Confirm who can approve scope changes before accepting responsibility for a delivery date.
Where this career could take you
- 01Project coordinator
- 02Project manager
- 03Senior project manager or delivery lead
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Coordinate one small volunteer project with a named owner for each task, a visible risk log, and a short review after the work finishes.
