Skills that make the work valuable
- RFP compliance mapping
- Win-theme development
- Evidence interviewing
- Proposal coordination
Build proof, not just a list
Create a practice response to a public request for proposals using a fictional service team. Include a compliance matrix, evidence-backed executive summary, delivery approach, and a list of assumptions the buyer would need to confirm.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Price from response complexity, required sections, evidence availability, and review schedule. Separate writing from bid management, design, and commercial approval. Late technical inputs and last-minute requirement changes can create overtime, so define content deadlines, revision limits, and who owns the submission process before work begins.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for proposal writer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
An internal role can build reusable evidence and close relationships with sales and delivery teams. Evaluate deadline intensity, approval bottlenecks, and whether writers can challenge unsupported claims in a bid.
Running a freelance business
Independent proposal writing can offer discrete engagements with clear deadlines. Confidentiality, unfamiliar services, and dependency on busy subject experts complicate estimates, while several simultaneous bids can create sharp peaks in workload.

Try one small next step
Take a publicly available RFP and map every requirement to a response section. Draft a brief executive summary that uses only capabilities you can substantiate.
