Skills that make the work valuable
- Revenue lifecycle mapping
- Cross-system data definitions
- Lead-to-customer handoff design
- Revenue reporting diagnostics
Build proof, not just a list
Design a fictional lead-to-renewal operating model. Map lifecycle stages, record ownership, handoff criteria, and reporting definitions, including examples where marketing, sales, and customer success would otherwise count the same event differently.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Scope the teams, systems, lifecycle stages, and historical data involved before quoting. Separate discovery and design from migrations or automation builds. Include cross-team workshops and validation; alignment work can take more time than configuration, and a recurring advisory contract needs a named decision maker for shared definitions.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for revenue operations consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment provides ongoing access across the revenue lifecycle and the chance to test shared processes. Assess whether the role has enough cross-team authority to match its responsibility for reporting and coordination.
Running a freelance business
Independent consultants can address a specific lifecycle break or system transition. Broad promises to fix revenue obscure the work involved, so sell a defined operational outcome with agreed implementation responsibilities.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Map a fictional customer's path from enquiry to renewal and identify three handoffs where ownership, timing, or data definitions could cause disagreement.
