Skills that make the work valuable
- Buyer discovery interviews
- Opportunity qualification
- Sales conversation analysis
- Proposal and objection handling
Build proof, not just a list
Create a sales improvement case for a fictional business-to-business offer. Define buyer needs, qualification questions, a demonstration outline, and follow-up examples, then explain how you would evaluate the process.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Specify whether the engagement delivers a sales process, coaching, or direct selling activity. Separate advisory fees from any commission and define attribution, payment timing, and exclusions. Results-based compensation carries uncertainty when pricing, lead quality, and delivery quality sit outside your control; model that uncertainty before promising capacity.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for sales consultant work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Employment can provide an established offer, sales tools, and a pipeline, with compensation split between base and incentives. Compare quota assumptions, territory quality, and commission timing when assessing an offer.
Running a freelance business
Consultants can work across offers and sell a focused diagnostic or training package. Commission-only arrangements may require substantial unpaid work, and revenue attribution needs agreement before the first opportunity.
Where this career could take you
- 01Sales representative
- 02Sales consultant
- 03Sales lead or independent sales adviser
An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Interview a business owner about a frequently stalled sale, then draft five discovery questions and a follow-up sequence that addresses the buyer's decision process.
