Skills that make the work valuable
- Retrospective facilitation
- Impediment analysis
- Sprint planning support
- Team flow measurement
Build proof, not just a list
Facilitate a retrospective for a willing project team. Document one recurring bottleneck, agree on an experiment, and compare the next work cycle with the baseline without ranking individual contributors.
How to price this work as a freelancer
Define whether an engagement covers facilitation, team coaching, or broader organizational change. Price the number of teams and coaching hours, including preparation and follow-up. Short workshops can be fixed scope; a recurring contract should avoid promising velocity increases that depend on decisions outside your control.
Start with the income you need to replace
Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).
For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.
These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for scrum master work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.
Employee or freelancer?
Working as an employee
Working inside a team lets you observe whether changes persist and build trust over time. Career value comes from helping teams solve constraints, with evidence beyond the number of meetings facilitated.
Running a freelance business
Freelance coaching can bring an outside perspective, especially during a team reset. Sustainable improvements may take longer than the contract, so define a handover and internal owner for follow-through.

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.
Try one small next step
Offer to facilitate one retrospective for a volunteer team, then follow up on its single agreed experiment and collect feedback on your facilitation.
