Solutions architect: salary vs freelance rates

A solutions architect designs how systems should work together to meet a business need. Their value is making technical tradeoffs explicit before expensive implementation decisions create avoidable reliability, security, or operating problems.

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Integration architecture
  • Nonfunctional requirements
  • Technical tradeoff analysis
  • Architecture decision records

Build proof, not just a list

Design a fictional booking platform with payments, notifications, and reporting. Document interfaces, failure handling, access boundaries, operating assumptions, and two architecture alternatives with reasons for your recommendation.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Sell a bounded discovery and architecture package before estimating implementation oversight. Specify systems reviewed, decision records, and review sessions. Include time to inspect existing constraints and validate assumptions; architecture advice based on incomplete access can create rework that a short workshop quote did not anticipate.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for solutions architect work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

Employment gives you access to the systems and long-term operational evidence needed to test design choices. Seniority reflects sound tradeoffs and influence across teams, alongside technical breadth.

Running a freelance business

Freelance architecture works well when clients need an independent review or a defined integration plan. Clarify whether your responsibility includes implementation verification, security review, or ongoing operational support.

Where this career could take you

  2. 02Solutions architect
  3. 03Principal architect or independent adviser

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.

Try one small next step

Write an architecture decision record for one familiar integration, comparing two approaches on failure recovery, cost assumptions, maintenance, and user needs.
