UI designer: salary vs freelance rates

A UI designer builds the visual language and interface details people interact with. Clear hierarchy, consistent controls, and usable states help products communicate what matters and how to act.

U.S. employee wage reference

$104,000 / year

Web and digital interface designers · May 2025 national median

Illustrative freelance rate

$115.84 / hour

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

The wage is for the named occupation; the hourly rate is a planning calculation, not a surveyed freelance price for this specialty. Adjust the assumptions below.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Visual hierarchy
  • Component design
  • Responsive layouts
  • Interaction states

Build proof, not just a list

Create a responsive dashboard with loading, empty, error, and success states. Document typography, spacing, contrast checks, and component behavior so another person can implement the interface without guessing at edge cases.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Quote a defined set of screens, breakpoints, component states, and asset exports rather than an unrestricted visual refresh. Account for design reviews, font licensing, and implementation checks. Late content changes and missing interaction requirements can expand work well beyond the original screen count.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for ui designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

A staff role can offer a shared design system and close implementation feedback. Investigate whether accessibility, visual quality, and review time are supported alongside delivery deadlines and feature output.

Running a freelance business

Freelance UI work suits clearly bounded interfaces and visual systems. Client feedback may arrive through several reviewers, so approval authority and the number of revisions strongly affect project profitability.

Where this career could take you

  1. 01Junior UI designer
  2. 02Interface design specialist
  3. 03UI design lead

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.

Try one small next step

Design a small account settings flow in a tool you already have. Ask a developer to identify unclear states and improve the handoff from that feedback.
