Skills that make the work valuable

  • Journey mapping
  • Interaction design
  • Usability testing
  • Accessible wireframes

Build proof, not just a list

Redesign a public appointment booking journey as an independent concept. Show the original friction, task flow, wireframes, and findings from consented usability sessions, including limitations and changes made after feedback.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Scope a discovery and interaction design engagement around named journeys, deliverables, and review rounds. Include stakeholder workshops, participant recruitment, and developer handoff in the estimate. Repeated approvals and waiting for research access can reduce billable utilization even when the screen count stays small.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for ux designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

Employment can provide ongoing access to users, analytics, and engineering partners. Assess whether designers influence product decisions or mainly produce screens after priorities have already been fixed.

Running a freelance business

Independent UX projects can offer focused ownership of a journey. You must negotiate access to real users and decision makers, and protect time for discovery before committing to final designs.
