UX researcher: salary vs freelance rates

A UX researcher investigates how people behave and what they need from a product. Research helps teams replace assumptions with evidence, while making uncertainty and the limits of findings explicit.

U.S. employee wage reference

$78,760 / year

Market research analysts · May 2025 national median

Illustrative freelance rate

$94.80 / hour

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

The wage is for the named occupation; the hourly rate is a planning calculation, not a surveyed freelance price for this specialty. Adjust the assumptions below.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Research planning
  • Interview moderation
  • Qualitative analysis
  • Usability evaluation

Build proof, not just a list

Study a narrow everyday task with consented participants and a documented research question. Share the discussion guide, anonymized observations, themes, and product recommendations, distinguishing observed behavior from interpretations and untested hypotheses.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Scope studies by research questions, participant criteria, method, analysis depth, and stakeholder outputs. Quote recruitment and participant incentives separately where appropriate. Scheduling failures, slow consent processes, and repeated requests for additional analysis can reduce utilization even when the number of interviews remains unchanged.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for ux researcher work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An internal role can offer repeated access to product teams and a growing evidence base. Check whether research informs decisions early or mainly validates solutions after commitments have been made.

Running a freelance business

Independent research allows concentrated studies and methodological specialization. Access, recruitment, and stakeholder trust take work before sessions begin, and clients must agree how sensitive information and findings will be handled.

Try one small next step

Observe two willing people completing an ordinary task with a product they already use. Anonymize notes, compare their difficulties, and write one recommendation with an explicit limitation.
