UX writer: salary vs freelance rates

A UX writer shapes the words inside a product, from navigation to error recovery. Clear language helps people understand choices, complete tasks, and recover when something goes wrong.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Interface microcopy
  • Content patterns
  • Error-message design
  • Language usability testing

Build proof, not just a list

Rewrite a small account recovery flow, including confirmation, failure, and support handoff states. Explain the user concern behind each message and test whether participants understand the next action without extra coaching.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Scope interface writing by journeys, states, languages, and review responsibilities rather than short text length. Include product discovery, terminology alignment, and implementation checks. Localization constraints and late design changes can multiply the number of messages, making version control and approval boundaries important to the estimate.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for ux writer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

An internal UX writing role can support consistent language across a product. Ask whether writers join discovery and design reviews, and how content decisions are coordinated with legal, localization, and support teams.

Running a freelance business

Independent UX writing suits targeted audits or defined product journeys. Limited system access can hide important states, while shared terminology and cross-team approvals may require more coordination than the final word count suggests.

  2. 02Product content specialist
  3. 03UX writing lead

An example path, with room for lateral moves or specialization. Progression depends on opportunities and demonstrated work; these steps do not imply a timetable or salary increase.

Try one small next step

Collect confusing error messages from a personal test project and rewrite a complete recovery sequence. Ask a willing reader what happened and what they would do next.
