Web designer: salary vs freelance rates

A web designer plans page structure and visual presentation around visitor goals. Good work balances brand expression, readable content, accessibility, and responsive behavior so a website supports useful actions.

Illustrative freelance rate

$115.84 / hour

To replace this wage plus $15K benefits, with 1,200 billable hours/year, $20K business costs, and no percentage fees. Before personal taxes.

The wage is for the named occupation; the hourly rate is a planning calculation, not a surveyed freelance price for this specialty. Adjust the assumptions below.

Skills that make the work valuable

  • Information architecture
  • Responsive web design
  • Accessible layouts
  • Content hierarchy

Build proof, not just a list

Design a small service website with a homepage, service page, and inquiry journey. Include mobile layouts, content priorities, navigation rationale, and accessibility annotations; clearly state whether any development was part of your work.

How to price this work as a freelancer

Distinguish design-only deliverables from website implementation, content migration, and ongoing maintenance before quoting. Set page templates, breakpoints, and review rounds. Missing copy, late stakeholder decisions, and additional page types often consume more time than the initial visual design estimate suggests.

Start with the income you need to replace

Required hourly rate = (target salary + benefits budget + annual business expenses) ÷ (annual billable hours × share of revenue retained after fees).

For illustration, $100/hour × 25 billable hours/week × 48 working weeks = $120,000 revenue. After $20,000 in business expenses, that leaves $100,000 profit before personal taxes. Replacing a $100,000 salary plus $15,000 in benefits under those assumptions takes $112.50/hour, with no percentage fees.

These are editable planning assumptions, not rates surveyed for web designer work. Your personal taxes, location, contract terms, and workload still affect the comparison.

Employee or freelancer?

Working as an employee

Employment may pair design with developers, writers, and ongoing website analytics. Clarify whether the role expects visual design alone or also development, content updates, and responsibility for conversion performance.

Running a freelance business

Freelance website design can be packaged around a small set of templates. You must manage content readiness and technical handoff, and explain clearly which implementation or maintenance responsibilities remain outside the engagement.
